It was great to meet so many enthusiastic teachers last week at the Calgary City Teachers’ Convention, and to introduce them to my new “baby.”
The best part was discussing with teachers how they might use non-obvious books to meet curricular objectives. We talked about using literature to teach science, social studies and language arts. We talked about refugees, empathy, compassion, about “fitting in,” and how the effectiveness of humour depends on the understanding of a particular culture. We yabbered about creative writing technigues, and I drank a lot and a lot of water.
By Friday night I was totally talked out and kind of exhausted. Let’s just say I was so tired that I missed the cork flying off a bottle of champagne.
And that cork was the lead up to a forthcoming party. I hope you can make it.
